GCL’s Lighting Solution for Moor House Lift Cars: Fast, Safe, Energy-Efficient Modernisation in a Landmark London Skyscraper

Supporting 1,600+ Workers With Safe, Low-Carbon Lighting

Moor House is a prominent 21-storey building in the City of London, standing 85 metres tall and home to leading global financial tenants. With over 1,600 people working there daily, ensuring operational safety and energy efficiency is a top priority.

When Moor House Management Services (MHMS) approached Skanska to replace halogen lift car lighting with modern LED lamps, they chose GCL as the delivery partner. With a track record of safe, time-sensitive work, GCL was entrusted with this high-risk project—completing it in a single weekend.

The Requirements for Moor House Lift Cars

The lift lighting upgrade needed to:

  • Be completed over one weekend with zero disruption to operations

  • Save long-term energy costs and reduce carbon output

  • Maintain the existing colour rendering to match building aesthetics

  • Avoid any bespoke changes to existing luminaire housing

  • Navigate access to lift cars and car park lifts safely and efficiently

Key Challenges of the Lift Lighting Project

GCL faced several challenges on this project, including:

  • Coordinating work in a 24-hour building without interfering with operations

  • Accessing and working on top of moving lift cars, which required advanced safety measures

  • Conducting full surveys of existing systems in tight, enclosed spaces

  • Minimising the need for specialist engineers on-site

Despite the scale and complexity, GCL completed all work safely and ahead of schedule.

The GCL Solution for Moor House

GCL developed a fast, pre-planned strategy that reduced onsite time and ensured a safe working environment. The solution included:

  • Prewiring LED light kits and preparing installation off-site to speed up delivery

  • Applying strict health and safety protocols throughout

  • Sourcing 10W energy-saving LED lamps to replace 50W halogens

  • Reducing lift lighting energy consumption by 55%

  • Adapting the existing emergency lighting system from central to local battery power

  • Retaining the same colour rendering to preserve interior consistency

GCL’s proactive planning allowed the project to be completed in one third of the typical time.

Results for the Client

Moor House benefitted from:

  • Reduced lift energy consumption from 50W to 10W per unit

  • Minimal future maintenance thanks to long-life LEDs

  • Full project completion within a single weekend

  • Continued tenant safety throughout the process

  • A strong return on investment and immediate cost savings

"GCL came up with a solution which didn’t entail expensive bespoke fittings and could use the existing wiring. Working with our lift maintenance company the lights in all lift cars were successfully replaced and the heat gain problem is non- existent."
